Banking On Improved Defense

Wait-and-see.
Wait-and-see.

To read and listen to some in St. Louis, the defense of the Cardinals was just a step above the 1962 Mets.

So the Cardinals, rather than going out and beefing up the rosters, specifically the infield, signed Dexter Fowler and the way some folks are crowing in the Midwest, the Cardinals just acquired Ken Griffey, Jr. in his prime.

Color Charles LeClaire of USA Today a bit skeptical that Fowler is the magic elixir as he typed for a piece that appeared on FOXSports.com.

Dexter Fowler in center, Kolten Wong at second, Randal Grichuk in left, Aledmys Diaz in his second full season at short – it sure sounds better. And, though spring-training games matter little, manager Mike Matheny is sure to emphasize crisper defense from the start of Grapefruit League play. The Cardinals need to set a tone early and carry their focus into the season.

If the Cardinals are cool with giving up a virtual out in play joltin’ Kolton Wong, then fine. Joe doesn’t see where Matt Carpenter is the new Keith Hernandez and Jhonny Peralta will not make folks forget Scott Rolen.

And no, Joe never bought that Windmill Grichuk was any wizard with the glove. Nothing more than OK.

So has the defense improved? That’s still a mystery.
