Well now, Joe heart fluttered a bit — all for the better — when he read that it appears the job at third base is open for the best applicant.
That seems to be the word from Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch when he mentioned in a chat on the paper’s website that Jhonny Peralta, on the wrong side of 30 with his numbers dipping, is not locked in as the starting third baseman and is open for all spring training types to win, including Matt Carpenter.
Ghost of Heity Cruz: Can you handicap the “race” for the third-base job? I had the impression it was Peralta’s job; now it sounds like it’s wide open.
Derrick Goold: It does sound more open. That was certainly Mozeliak’s message on Sunday at the Warm-Up. I would list the favorites in this order: Jhonny Peralta, Jedd Gyorko, Matt Carpenter (if Adams hammers way into first base), and then Greg Garcia. But let’s put it to a vote.
To Joe, this is common sense. Greg Garcia, for reasons unknown, always seems to be in Mike Matheny’s doghouse, at least as a starter. He would seem like a good choice.
Joe wishes the Cardinals would just move on from Matt Adams. No confidence in that guy at all.
Personally, an infield of Greg Garcia at third, Al Diaz at short, Matt Carpenter at second and Jedd Gyorko at first seems OK. If you want to flip Garcia and Carpenter, that’s fine.
Of course, it doesn’t seem like Joe’s ideal infield will happen because a certain someone in the front office appears to have a fetish for joltin’ Kolton Wong.
