No matter what happens this week, the lineup of the Cardinals will surely be different next year.
Outside of three or four players, the lineup is a mess. Too many part-timers playing full-time; too many players playing out of position. Already it was leaked that the Redbirds peddled Jaime Garcia before the trade deadline, but there were no suitors.
The next fish to be dangled out for bait? Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch believes it will be first baseman Matt Adams.
Cardinals have already tried to see what the market is and will be for Jaime Garcia this winter, and they recognize that Matt Adams isn’t being used as much as his bat would imply, and he’s a redundancy going forward, especially if the Cardinals find a way to open up first base full-time for Carpenter.
Well, this makes sense but here is the trick: First base is a power position. Carpenter is not a power hitter. So are the Cardinals going to be a singles-hitting club? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
If Carpenter is your first baseman come April 2017, that tells Joe the Cardinals are going to try to trade for a big stick in the outfield, specifically left field.
